“Hal Fischer’s 1977 book Gay Semiotics used photography to catalogue the coded fashions of homosexual men. The book is a clear document in the use of fashion to establish identity, specifically one in the context of subcultural association.
Canberra based emerging artist Angus McGrath’s Semiotics Club follows in the footsteps of Fischer, but uses photo and text on readymade media to place this narrative in an intimate context. Semiotics Club functions across layers, from veiled confessions and in-jokes to investigations of identity and subculture.”
