PhotoAccess is delighted to announce an exciting new commission opportunity for a photographer/artist to create a large-scale public photo-media installation enlivening the exterior of the Manuka Arts Centre. This is an opportunity for you to receive a generous stipend to create a new work with great public exposure.
Proudly supported by the ACT Government through the Transport Canberra and City Services’ Creative Endeavour grant program, this opportunity is open to any ACT and region based artist who has been impacted over the past year by COVID-19. This might mean that you’ve encountered financial hardship, been unable to continue your creative practice as normal due to travel restrictions or perhaps rather that your approach to your work has changed as you’ve adapted to social isolation and other physical and emotional challenges.
Artists are welcome to submit works on any theme, though we particularly invite submissions exploring the concept of ‘Here in Canberra!’. This year, perhaps more than any other, we’ve discovered our local environment anew, even as the ways in which we live in it have transformed. We’re looking for a fresh, dynamic work that expresses your sense of living in the here and now, in all its complexities!
This a paid commission opportunity, with the selected artist receiving a stipend of $2,000 (incl GST) to produce a new work.
The work will be printed at 3.2m x 2m, portrait orientation, and installed on the exterior wall of the Manuka Arts Centre, facing New South Wales Crescent, in Griffith. This location receives considerable passing traffic, particularly in the summer months as it is adjacent to Manuka Pool. As well as creating visual interest as a stand-alone work, the installation will help signal to passers-by PhotoAccess’ location in the centre.
PhotoAccess will manage printing and installation of the final work, in collaboration with the artist, and cover relevant costs up to $2,000. The work will remain in situ for at least six months, or until it starts to look very ratty! The work will be fully credited.
PhotoAccess will also support the installation with a full media promotion package and feature the work in our online gallery.
Deadline for EoIs: Monday, 26 October, 2020, 11.59pm
We expect for the final work to be submitted by close of November, with the work installed during December 2020.
The final artwork must be in a 3:2 aspect ratio, portrait orientation. It can be a single picture, a photo-collage, augmented reality work or other photo-media or cross-media based artwork.
The work must be a new work produced especially for this commission, but it can, of course, draw on your existing practice.
Submissions for this commission will be assessed by the PhotoAccess team.
The selected artist will retain copyright in the produced work, but must agree to grant PhotoAccess a non-exclusive licence to reproduce the work for our publication and promotional activities, in perpetuity.
This commission aims to support a Canberra based photo-media practitioner whose practice has been affected over the last six months by the COVID-19 pandemic. In your application below, please provide a short impact statement. This might, but does not necessarily need to, relate to your finances. Impacts may also be any creative, social, physical or emotional obstacles to making that you’ve experienced over the last six months.
