Call for Artist/Photographer Expressions of Interest
PhotoAccess is delighted to invite ACT and region emerging artists and photographers to apply for inclusion in VIEW2022. This is an opportunity to feature in our annual group exhibition showcasing future leaders in photo-media practice.
Based at the Manuka Arts Centre in Canberra, PhotoAccess is a leading Australian centre for contemporary photography, film-making and media arts. We are an experienced non-profit visual arts organisation, presenting each year a dynamic program encompassing exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, events and publications.
VIEW2022 will open in PhotoAccess’ Huw Davies Gallery on Thursday 3 February, 2022 and close on Saturday, 5 March, 2022. The installation will be accompanied by a substantial, full-colour catalogue and a digital exhibition on PhotoAccess’ Online Gallery.
Artists and photographers are invited to propose innovative and thought-provoking works that demonstrate conceptual and material innovation and an adventurous engagement with contemporary issues and art practices. Works may be in any medium using or incorporating photographic processes, including still and moving images developed through digital and/or analogue techniques, multimedia, photo-sculptures and 3D installations.
Artists and photographers are also invited to submit proposals for works to be installed in the Manuka Arts Centre gardens and grounds, including on the exterior of the buildings.
Proposed works must not have been previously extensively exhibited, though they may have been used in graduation shows.
Eligible artists and photographers must be ‘emerging’ or ‘re-emerging’, defined for this opportunity as an artist/photographer within the first three years of their practice. Artists/photographers may, for example, have recently graduated from university degrees in relevant disciplines, be embarking upon their professional practice after a period of informal education or returning to practice after time away. Current undergraduate students are not eligible.
Artists/photographers proposing works for the exhibition must live within the ACT or adjoining regions, including the South Coast, Southern Highlands, the Snowy Monaro and the Eastern Riverina.
Proposals for VIEW2022 will be sourced through an open call and direct invitation and assessed by a panel of PhotoAccess staff. They will be assessed by a panel in relation to their overall artistic merit, demonstration of innovative conceptual and technical realisation, suitability for display in the Huw Davies Gallery and contribution to the overall exhibition concept.
Artists/photographers selected for VIEW2022 will receive a $100 (ex GST) stipend to assist with production, framing and mounting costs.
All exhibiting artists/photographers will also receive a complimentary annual PhotoAccess membership.
PhotoAccess will work with selected artists/photographers to develop a comprehensive promotions package, including invitations, media releases and a catalogue, and create a unique launch event, including drinks and catering. PhotoAccess may be able to provide some assistance with mounting, transport, install and de-install.
Artists/photographers are invited to present their exhibited works for sale, on the basis of 65% commission to the artist and 35% to the gallery. Artists/photographers will be invited to work with PhotoAccess to develop public programs such as a talk, workshop or festival event to be presented during the exhibition period. We expect exhibiting artists/photographers to participate in our Open Day on Saturday, 26 February, 2022.
Artists/photographers are invited to submit proposals via the below form by midnight of Sunday 28 November 2021. Selected artists will be notified by Wednesday 8 December 2021.
Artists will be expected to meet deadlines for promotional material to enable production of the catalogue and marketing package. High-res images of selected works, full captions, artist statement and artist biography will be due at PhotoAccess by Wednesday 15 December 2021. Artists will need to be contactable during mid-January to resolve the exhibition content.
Selected works must be completed and ready for installation no later than Friday 28 January 2022. De-install will be on Sunday, 6 March, 2022.
