Weaving Experimental Cinema

Immerse yourself in the exciting realm of experimental film and digital weaving with talented local artist and PhotoAccess 2021 Dark Matter resident Caroline Huf!

Over five Monday night sessions, participants will explore the world of digital experimental weaving videos, using Adobe After Effects to create stunning visual effects and techniques that blend traditional textile techniques with contemporary film technology.

Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with different styles and approaches, under Caroline’s expert guidance. At the end of the workshop, they will come together to stitch their weaving videos into a unique digital quilt patchwork, showcasing the diversity of the group’s creative output.

But that’s not all – in partnership with the Canberra Short Film Festival, the enrolment fee for this workshop also includes a free submission entry into the Canberra Short Film Festival’s Experimental Film Category. This is an incredible opportunity for participants to showcase their work on a larger platform and have their film screened at the viewing at PhotoAccess in November, 2023.

First Session, Monday April 17th, 2023, 6-9pm at PhotoAccess

• Introduction to digital weaving and experimental cinema
• Discussion of examples, artist references and Caroline’s work
• Introduction to quilt project
• Introduction to experimenting with taking video and digital weaving in After Effects

Second Session, Monday April 24th, 2023, 6-9pm at PhotoAccess

• Participants bringing in video footage to experiment
• Introduction to Adobe After Effects – basic setup, tracks and masks
• Choosing weaving patterns
• Making warp and weft
• Altering time and positions

Third Session, Monday May 1st, 2023, 6-9pm at PhotoAccess

• Continuing to edit footage
• Playing around with warping and weft
• Making masks

Fourth Session, Monday May 8th, 2023, 6-9pm at PhotoAccess

• Continuing to edit and finalise footage
• Swapping video
• Stitching and joining weaving sample videos together to make a group digital quilt patchwork

Fifth Session, Monday May 15th, 2023, 6-9pm at PhotoAccess

• Final session
• Discussion and showcase of videos made
• Looking at work on a larger scale through projections
• Finalising for Canberra Short Film Festival submission

• Free submission to the Canberra Short Film Festival Experimental Film Category (screening date TBA)

• You can bring your own laptop if you have Adobe After Effects already installed, as well as your own digital camera if you wish to work on your own devices

Enrolments for this workshop close at 5pm Wednesday April 12th, 2023. As a not-for-profit, our financial margins are narrow and classes require a minimum number of participants to run. In the event that PhotoAccess cancels a workshop, refunds will be paid in full or a transfer allowed free of charge. If a class is postponed, we will endeavour to reschedule at a time convenient to enrolled participants.

PhotoAccess will happily refund or transfer workshop fees up to 7 days prior to the start date of the workshop. If less than 7 days’ notice is given, PhotoAccess can offer a partial refund. Alternatively, enrolment can transfer to another workshop plus a $50 transfer fee. If less than 48 hours are given, no refunds or transfers can be given.
