PhotoAccess is delighted to announce our 2021/2 online instalment of its established Concept to Exhibition studio series. This unique mentored program is for any image makers who would like to work in a structured way towards a body of work, further their professional practice, and have the chance to exhibit through an established ACT gallery – all the while supported by an established tutor, peers, and PhotoAccess.
This year, you’ll have the opportunity to work under the guidance of 2021 National Photographic Portrait Prize finalist Marzena Wasikowska. Marzena is an internationally exhibiting artist and well established Canberran photographer, with works in the National Portrait Gallery and Canberra Museum and Gallery collections. She has been practicing in Canberra since 1987, and is a PhD candidate in Photography and Media Arts at the Australian National University.
In Concept to Exhibition, you’ll initiate a personal photography project and develop it over the year through Marzena’s mentorship and guidance, input and discussion from your workshop peers, and the opportunity to work in a structured environment. PhotoAccess staff will also be on hand to support and assist you. This is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and take your practice to the next level, working towards a polished portfolio of images and a collaborative online exhibition.
In addition to fostering your personal practice, Marzena will work with the workshop group to formulate, develop and execute a joint digital exhibition to be featured on PhotoAccess’ Online Gallery. You’ll discover the ins and outs of working towards a virtual show, including developing a proposal, curating and producing your images, writing an artist statement and sequencing a body of work in the online sphere. PhotoAccess will collaborate with you to build the online gallery.
You’ll also have the opportunity to exhibit a physical print portfolio of your work in the Huw Davies Gallery in September/October 2022. The online exhibition and portfolio display will be supported with a comprehensive marketing and promotions package, including a physical and online opening. But, please note that the cost of printing your portfolio and transporting it to Canberra is not included in the workshop enrolment fee.
The Concept to Exhibition workshop will meet regularly on Zoom 0ver ten months, sharing work, receiving feedback, offering support, building connections and sharing research and art references. You’ll learn how to read your own images, respond to other’s work, and discover where your practice sits within an art historical context. While the opportunity to work with and learn from Marzena is key to this workshop, you’ll also benefit enormously from collaborating with your co-participants, developing your visual literacy, and expanding your network and connections. Concept to Exhibition groups always develop a strong creative energy, and participants find that the support and enjoyment they derive from interacting with the workshop enables them to produce new work well beyond what they might have imagined or expected.
This workshop is for all experience levels, but you do need to have an understanding of the fundamentals of photography and be confident with your chosen camera. A basic understanding of Lightroom and or Photoshop is also advisable. If you’d like to discuss the recommended skills or need help to develop them, please have a chat with the PhotoAccess team via an email to [email protected]
9:30am-12:30pm Saturdays via Zoom.
Marzena Wasikowska is a Canberra-based photographer and photo-media artist. Portraiture is a strong component of her practice and she was a National Photographic Portrait Prize finalist at the National Portrait Gallery in 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2018.
Since 2010, her work has also explored meditations on the built environment, as well as waterscapes and the challenges of visualising global warming. This work seeks to extend the vocabulary of the sublime to include a sense of awe about what we have done to the landscape of the Earth. Marzena has exhibited in Australia and overseas and is currently a PhD candidate in Photography and Media Arts at the Australian National University.
