What makes the city at night such an intriguing place? How can you create stunning images that reflect urban possibilities of adventure, romance and the unexpected?
In this hands-on workshop, held over three consecutive evenings, you’ll join acclaimed night street photographer and experienced tutor Lynn Smith and other after-dark enthusiasts to explore capturing the atmosphere, movement and character of Canberra after sunset. You’ll consider examples of night photography from around the world, learn the art and craft of light painting and develop your creative and technical skills in interpreting night-time urban landscapes.
Suitable for image-makers working with all types of cameras, including DSLRs, mirrorless, analogues SLRs and smartphones. You will need basic camera skills and be 16 years or older.
Day One | PhotoAccess: Wednesday, 26 June: 6.00 – 9.00pm
Day Two | Canberra CBD Braddon: Thursday 27 June: 6.00 – 9.00pm
Day Three | Canberra CBD City: Friday 28 June: 6.00 – 9.00pm
After the workshop, you’ll be invited to upload your images to the ‘Street Photography with Lynn Smith’ Flickr group to receive online feedback from Lynn, classmates and other photographers around the world. Please make sure you dress for the cool evening weather and wear closed shoes for location shoots.
Enrolment for this workshop will close at 3pm, Friday 21 June, 2019.
Bring your own camera, and a tripod and/or additional lenses and/or selfie stick if you would like to use them. If applicable, remember to charge your batteries and bring your a memory card.
Please bring a small torch and, if you would like to try timing exposures, a device like a smartphone that can count seconds.
Please make sure you dress for the cool evening weather and wear closed shoes for location shoots.
Please also bring a thermos or keep cup so you can take warm beverages with you.
A PhotoAccess notebook and pencil as well as warm tea and coffee to fill your thermos or keep cup.
City Noir will run over 3 consecutive nights, Wednesday 26, Thursday 27 & Friday 29 June 2019, 6pm-9pm each evening.
Lynn Smith is an exhibiting fine art photographer, mentor, curator, book editor and highly experienced tutor specialising in photographing urban landscapes. After a long career as a creative director in the advertising industry, Lynn has spent the last two decades exploring how to shoot the streets of Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Newcastle, London, Paris, Berlin and Jakarta, at night, without people. He holds two Masters degrees from the Sydney College of the Arts and has taught at a wide variety of arts organisations. He is the founder of Creative Street Photography, an online Flickr community with almost 900 members, and he regularly edits photobooks in collaboration with his students.
