“It’s more important for a photographer to have very good shoes, than to have a very good camera.” – Sebastiao Salgado
Join PhotoAccess exhibiting photographer Helga Salwe for an inspiring photo-walk following the Uriarra Loop along sections of both the Molonglo and Murrumbidgee Rivers. Discover how to use your camera to see nature in new ways, and to express yourself in nature through photography.
Meeting at the Uriarra East picnic grounds, this morning meander begins with Helga introducing her practice and its foundation in focused contemplation of the natural world. You’ll then traverse the loop path, pausing along the way as Helga leads a discussion of how to train yourself to become more aware of photographic potential in your surrounds and assists with technical challenges to capturing the beautiful river landscape.
This photo-walk is a wonderful opportunity to learn from an artist who creates work not by seeking out particular, pre-imagined subjects or images, but through opening her heart and mind to her surroundings so that she can see what is actually there – the forms, colours and light. For Helga, if you know how to look, ‘pictures are given to you’.
The Uriarra Loop is a 2.5 km, predominantly flat and easy walking track. During the morning, you’ll pass through a forest of large River Oaks and open grazing land, and probably see ducks, white faced herons and sulphur-crested cockatoos. Wombats and platypus are a possibility too.
This workshop is suitable for all photographers, and walkers! If you don’t have a camera, you’re welcome to use your smartphone.
Enrolments for this workshop close at 4pm on Friday, 6th March, 2020. PhotoAccess reserves the right to cancel the workshop if there are insufficient enrolments. If we have to cancel, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.
Contemplating Nature is scheduled for Sunday 8 March, starting at 10am and finishing at 1pm. Please meet at the Uriarra East picnic area by 9.45am to ensure a prompt start.
