Digital Photography: The Works

Course outline
This course is designed for people who have made the jump to a digital SLR and want to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the digital environment—from digital capture to digital darkroom, colour management, preparing files for printing and the print process itself. The course is most suitable for people with at least a basic understanding of the digital environment, including camera and computer use.
Description
The course will have a strong practical focus. Set exercises will encourage participants to explore and apply the principles of digital photography. In 36 hours class and field trip time you will cover:
• basic principles of digital images and digital files
• camera skills and camera use, including getting best results from your camera
• working with digital images, including basic use of Photoshop
• an introduction to practical colour management
• image production.
Included in the cost of the course is:
• a free one-year subscription to the Eye-One Photo colour management system
• printing of a number of images, both inkjet and RC Ra4, to demonstrate the difference between output and how to colour manage working with labs.
Times and program
36 hours on Wednesdays, 5.30 to 8.30 pm, beginning 4 August for 10 weeks with two field trips at times and locations to be agreed
Weeks 1–3 Digital basics and camera skills
Field trip 1
Weeks 4–6 Working with digital files and intro to Photoshop
Field trip 2
Weeks 7–9 Colour management and printing
